Creating Healthier Communities is an effort to improve the health and happiness of Maui residents with Complete Streets that include safe places to walk and bike. Maui MPO, County of Maui, Healthy Eating Active Living Coalition, and Blue Zones Project are working together to plan and advocate for streets that give people more options to reach their destinations - school, work, shopping and recreation. Complete Streets also support Maui County's Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2040.
Community input is essential to plan and design upcoming road improvement projects. Maui MPO and its partners gather input from residents to learn how safe they feel moving along Maui's streets, and what would make it better. To test potential improvements, the County did a Complete Streets demonstration project at the corner of Onehe'e Avenue and Uhu Street in Kahului. More improvement projects are being planned by the Healthy Eating Active Living Coalition. To get involved, email lauren@mauimpo.org
