West Maui Greenway Plan

The Maui MPO and consultant teams from Alta Planning + Design and SSFM International completed the West Maui Greenway Plan in September 2022. The Plan is a vision for a proposed 25-mile, multi-use trail that will connect Ukumehame to LĪpoa Point on Maui's west side.

When complete, this 25+ mile Greenway will provide safe and welcoming recreation and transportation opportunities for the community, separated from traffic from LĪpoa Point in the north to the Lāhainā Pali Trailhead to the south.

The West Maui Greenway Plan kicked off in August 2021, and developed a preferred route alignment, proposed trail types, and implementation strategies for the project. The plan had five goals in mind: foster community, bring joy, strengthen connectivity, promote safety and comfort, and ensure feasibility.

The project team conducted extensive public engagement, evaluated and prioritized route alternatives, and developed design guidance and visualizations to see that this major community asset highlights the diverse history, landscape, and culture of the region while providing safe and comfortable connections to local destinations.

Maui MPO invited the community to participate in an online interactive map and provide comments with their experiences and recommendations for what they would like to see in the future greenway. There were also community events where community members could learn more about the progress of the project and provide feedback on the greenway route and amenities. During the final round of engagement, the project team conducted in-person engagement by tabling at community destinations like farmer’s markets and shopping centers. During this final round, community members had the opportunity to review the draft plan and provide input on what they hope to see during the next phases of the greenway’s implementation.

Once funding is secured, the greenway can move into the environmental clearance, design, and construction phases.
