Maui MPO retains consultants to develop and create transportation planning studies for the island of Maui. Studies are paid for using federal funds from the Federal Highway Administation and the Federal Transportation Administration.
The West Maui Greenway is a proposed 25-mile, multi-use trail that will one day connect Ukumehame to Līpoa Point. When complete, the greenway will provide safe and welcoming recreation and transportation opportunities for the community, separated from traffic along the Honoapi‘ilani Highway. It will connect communities and destinations in West Maui, while becoming an attraction in and of itself. The West Maui Greenway will be open and accessible to people of all ages and abilities who walk, bike, or use assisted mobility devices. The future greenway operator will determine whether the greenway should be open to additional user types such as e-bikes, micromobility devices, and neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs).
Maui MPO maintains the Maui Travel Demand Model to provide travel information that aids in planning for regional transportation improvements. A model update completed in 2021 includes current (2019) and projected (2025, 2030, and 2045) transportation demand on the island of Maui using TransCAD modeling software.
The Vision Zero Maui Action Plan outlines the specific steps that the MPO and its partner agencies will take to achieve safe streets. The plan was developed with input from community members and partners. Based on analysis and input, the Vision Zero Action Plan identifies strategies that lower speeds, design streets to be more forgiving for human error, and prioritize safety for everyone, no matter their age, ability, background, race, income, or socioeconomic status.
The Ka‘ahumanu Ave Community Corridor is an exciting initiative to develop a community-supported vision for affordable housing and new transportation options on Maui’s busiest corridor. We've worked with you to envision a new future for the 2.5 miles of Ka‘ahumanu Avenue that connect Kahului and Wailuku.
On August 8, 2023, West Maui and Lahaina Town changed forever. Devastating fires tore through the community, claiming at least 101 lives. Homes and businesses were destroyed, including important cultural, historical, and spiritual sites. In a matter of hours, everything changed for this busy, thriving community and the people who call it home.
To support West Maui’s recovery efforts, the West Maui Community Corridor project changed course. Rather than an action plan, as originally intended, the project team developed a “Framework for a Resilient Future.” The framework is an expression of the vision and hopes we heard from the West Maui community, supported by technical analysis and the learnings of the project team. It offers focus areas and near-term projects to consider, all of which must be confirmed with the community.
The framework captures the hard work of West Maui residents, the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and Maui County while recognizing that the landscape and the community’s needs have changed since the fires. We hope the West Maui Community Corridor “Framework for a Resilient Future” can be a resource for planning and designing West Maui’s next steps. The community has an opportunity to reflect upon and express what matters in new ways, honoring West Maui’s past, current, and future kama‘āina and the lands that are their kuleana.
